Overview

The WASAA group offers  in 2020 (13-31 January) a 3 week program dedicated to Australian students registered in BSc and MSc programs in an Australian university. This is a unique opportunity to discover the French culture in a traditional and beautiful area by the Atlantic ocean.

The program will allow students to explore the latest trends in information technologies, including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, optical and satellite communications.

It will also be a first introduction to laboratory research work as well as a discovery of the French academic environment.

Accommodation will be provided on IMT Atlantique seaside campus offering many opportunities to interact with local students.

Courses and lectures

During the 3 weeks of the summer school, students will follow courses in one of the 4 thematic fields offered:

  • A- Artificial Intelligence and Robotics
  • B- Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality
  • C- Communication Systems
  • D-Human Factors

In addition they will be proposed 3 keynote lectures:

  • Human Factors applied to Naval Applications: Prof. Christine Chauvin (UBS)
  • Cyber Optics: Prof. Jean-Louis de Bougrenet (IMT Atlantique)
  • Challenges in Cyber Security: Dr Sylvain Guilley (Secure IC)

The courses will be given by professors of Wasaa’s French academic partners and by an expert in cybersecurity of the French company Secure-IC.

Choose your program

French courses, technical visits and projects

Students  will have 12 hours of courses in French language and French culture (including a supper in gourmet restaurant) and will visit three of the region’s most emblematic companies: Naval Group, Thales and CLS.

They will also visit the European Virtual Reality Centre.

From the first week they will be informed of the research project on which they will be able to work during the three weeks and whose defense will mark the end of the summer school.

Validation & Credits

The validation of the summer school will be done in a differentiated way according to the activity:

  • Regular and active participation in the industrial visits
  • Small MCQ at the end of each course module
  • Oral presentation of project results

Students who meet the requirements of the three weeks will be awarded 6 credits (ECTS).

Sport

The campus is well equipped with two sport halls and great outdoor areas. Football is of course very popular but basket-ball, badminton, rock climbing, fitness and many others are available.

Cultural Visits & Activities

Cultural visits will give the students a chance to discover Brest and its beautiful surroundings. The program also includes many social activities with French and international students  such as an introduction to traditional Breton dances and crêpes (pancake) making.

Accommodation

The students will live on IMT Atlantique campus overlooking the ocean, at the Maisel (student residences), in individual bedrooms.

If you want to book a room in one of our residences on campus, please specify this when you register: the cost for 3 weeks is about 300€.

Shared cooking facilities are available but most students choose to enjoy the quality of our local products in our restaurant. The cost for a full meal (lunch or dinner) is 3,65€ (6 AUD).

Fees:  1500€ *

Accommodation, meals, insurance and travel are not included.

We can arrange student’s pick up at Brest’s airport or at the train station.

*Students nominated by an Australian partner university of the WASAA group will not be charged fees.

Accommodation, meals, insurance, transportation and visa fees are at the charge of the student if not covered by his/her home university.
